Tough Time Again!

It is the time for paying the fee for the final examinations. Our government gives us right to be educated up to the age of 14. So when we cross this threshold, this right stands cancelled. 

Government is spending about Rs.42,000 Cr for education, but even government run schools charge fees for admission and examination. Our poor students get bicycles on the name of promoting education in rural areas especially for girls, but without examination they find it a bit tough to be motivated for studies, even if they want to be.

Due to this travesty of our education system, we found two girls of class X in a state run government high school, Udhanapur, Koria (CG), whose single parent was not in a condition to pay their daughters' fees for the final examination. Though the amount paid by 'Parivartan' was a mere Rs.325 each, however it has a value for many of the rural people in India.

We wish the girls all the luck for their examination and for their parent to get a source of income, to get them enrolled next year, at least in a government school.

Another World!

We are thankful to Mr Pramod Kumar for his generous support for ‘Parivartan’. He is guiding ten V std rural students for ‘Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST)’ which is held every year for the only Navodaya Vidyalaya in a district throughout the country.

All the expenditure is borne by the HRD Ministry, GOI for about 80 students who are getting through every year. The quality of education there is considered to be on a par with the finest schools of the country and probably the best a rural student can get in the area. We also provided some entrance examination books to them. This may be their gateway to a different world. Thanking Mr Pramod Kumar once again, we wish them all the luck and success!

Teacher-cum-Worker

Recently I visited a government primary school in my hometown in Chhattisgarh. It was my first work and I was shocked to see the situations. There is only one teacher for about 80 students. He is everything for the school, to my surprise; he was engaged in ‘Photography’ for the Election Commission. Students were left to study on their own often. In addition, like many schools in India, students from more than one class were getting education in the same room.

I interacted with the students and I found their academic performance quite unsatisfactory. Many students even from class V were unable to read and they were uncomfortable with basic mathematical operations like addition, subtraction. I wanted to finish some chapters of their mathematics textbook, but could not finish even the first exercise. However, they are bright and fairly smart in general questions and aptitude. With few basic questions like ‘which district do you live?’ I tried some complicated questions like ‘Who is the government?’ The answer to the second part from a student of IV was ‘One who distributes free rice, wheat and other things at cheaper rate and also runs the country.’

I was leant that ‘Municipal Corporation’ runs this school, even than the situation is dismal. I can think about the situation in village schools. So much of money and resources is spent for education in India, but without a holistic strategy and that is why we do not have the optimum results ever.
